Cheap track time?

So my 3 month-long project of building a working race car has come to a successful end! Now the next step is to drive it as much as I can over the winter so I’m comfortable once the season starts. I thought HPDE’s would have been a good place to find cheap track time, but it seems like they don’t allow open wheel cars. SCCA regionals like what I did last weekend don’t really offer as much time actually on the track as I’d like. Maybe “Test & Tune” events are what I’m looking for?

Not really track time, but what about Autocrosses? Beyond test and tunes and race weekends it would be rather tricky to get tons of time on real tracks outside of track days which it sounds like you cannot do.

I would agree with this since I’ve seen FF & FV’s at auto-x events, I’m just wondering if you’d be able to get enough time in. You might not get enough time in between runs to make some adjustments, and the next thing you know you’re done.

Build removable Caterham style fenders for the wheels that clip on to the suspension arms

Maybe some local BMWCCA auto x? They allow any make/model I think

I think autocross is too different to replace lapping on a road course. You don’t really shift very much, there aren’t any high speed corners or long braking zones, and you can’t build up a rhythm that is important in road racing.

Yea, Its not ideal but other than that you are stuck with organized track tests.

Open wheel track time is much harder to come by. Out here, it’s usually listed separately from the track days, and is less frequent. I have heard of people renting out entire tracks with a few friends to get time - depending on the track and the day it can be surprisingly cheap, especially weekdays. You usually need ~20 people to make it worthwhile, but you set the rules.

Check out NCCAR - Looks like $175 per car per hr during the week, accoring to their FAQ.

Autox in a FF is fantastic! I recommend it highly. I’m on my third FF now, a DB-6 Honda. Autox is an excellent way to refine the setup, become one with the car, learn new tracks quickly, find and fix the reliability bugs, and learn how to get after it on cold tires. Everything that you learn in autox applies directly to racing, but cold tire skills are critical to your race results. The way most races unfold, the field stretches out pretty quickly during the first lap. So, if you intend to pass anyone, you need to get it done at the start or during the first lap. Cold tires, cold brakes.

You will need really short gears. Plan on gearing for about 50, 60, 70, and 80 mph. With gears that short, you have way more power than grip, so you will learn fine throttle control. Autox will teach you how to drive in the rain.

There is almost no overlap between autoxers and road racers. The rare few who do both excel at both. Been there, done that.

That looks like a good time. Really makes me miss being in FSAE and getting to autoX our cars.

Probably not ideal, but it’s seat time. Alot of the barely-scraping-by local ovals will pretty much let you do whatever you want for not alot of money. If they have a paved infield, it lets you at least set up a course with a few types of corners that you can do repeatedly. My brother and I gave the guys at ours $50 on an off day and they let us have the track until we got bored.
